Tesla has officially rolled out the eagerly awaited Long Range RWD variant of the Model 3 in China priced at RMB 269,500 just under $38,000 the new variant offers an impressive 830 km driving range according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC). While CLTC figures are typically more optimistic than the global WLTP standard, this model still sets a new benchmark for Tesla’s production vehicles.

Longest-Range Tesla Yet

The new Model 3 LR RWD claims the title of Tesla’s longest-range vehicle, outpacing every previous model in its global lineup. For comparison, the company’s high-efficiency versions, such as the Long Range AWD and Performance models, have previously topped out at lower range numbers, making this new RWD variant the clear distance leader.

Tesla has also improved the Performance AWD Model 3 as part of this update. The upgraded configuration now boasts a range of 647 km, up from the previous 623 km, giving performance enthusiasts a little extra travel distance without sacrificing speed or handling.

Powertrain and Battery Upgrades

Under the rear axle, the new Long Range RWD variant houses a 3D6 electric motor producing 225 kW of power. This marks an improvement in performance efficiency over earlier versions.

Perhaps the most notable upgrade comes in the form of the battery pack. Tesla has moved away from the LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries supplied by CATL in previous RWD models and has adopted LG’s NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) cells. The new pack has a capacity of 78.4 kWh and supports 250 kW DC fast charging, allowing drivers to add significant range in just minutes at compatible Superchargers.

According to Tesla, these range improvements are largely due to two key factors:

  • Higher energy density in the new LG battery cells, which means more energy storage without adding significant weight.
  • Enhanced thermal management systems, which help maintain optimal battery performance and efficiency, even during high-speed driving or extreme temperatures.

Availability and Deliveries

Tesla has already opened orders for the Model 3 Long Range RWD in China. While the vehicle is available for reservation now, the company has announced that shipments will begin in September. Given Tesla’s popularity in the Chinese market and the strong demand for long-range EVs, industry analysts expect early deliveries to sell out quickly.

Added Incentives: Free FSD Transfer

In addition to launching the new Model 3 variant, Tesla has rolled out a limited-time offer for its Chinese customers free Full Self-Driving (FSD) package transfers. This means that existing Tesla owners who purchase a new vehicle can transfer their FSD software package to the new car without any extra cost.

This move is seen as a way to encourage existing Tesla drivers to upgrade to the latest models while preserving the value of their previous software investment. The FSD feature, which provides advanced driver assistance capabilities, is a significant purchase for many Tesla owners, making this free transfer a noteworthy incentive.

Strengthening Tesla’s Position in China

China is a critical market for Tesla, both in terms of sales volume and manufacturing capability. The company’s Shanghai Gigafactory has been instrumental in ramping up global production, and introducing a high-range, competitively priced Model 3 further strengthens Tesla’s appeal in a market where range anxiety still influences buying decisions.

By offering record-breaking range, faster charging, and attractive incentives like FSD transfers, Tesla is positioning itself to maintain strong momentum in the face of increasing competition from local EV manufacturers such as BYD, NIO, and XPeng.

The launch of the Long Range RWD Model 3 sets a new standard for Tesla and challenges the wider EV market to elevate its game. Its combination of extended range, efficient design, and advanced battery technology could influence future EV development across the industry.
