BYD is once again making waves in the performance EV world, and this time, the numbers are almost hard to believe. New regulatory documents confirm that the Chinese automaker is gearing up to debut the Yangwang U9 Track Edition an all-electric supercar packing an astonishing 3,000 horsepower.

This isn’t BYD’s first venture into the high-performance EV segment. The original Yangwang U9, unveiled earlier, marked the brand’s debut in the all-electric supercar category and stunned enthusiasts worldwide. That model featured four high-performance electric motors, producing a combined output of almost 1,300 horsepower. With this setup, it could sprint from 0 to 62 mph (0–100 km/h) in just 2.36 seconds.

The engineering behind the U9 was equally impressive. Each wheel had its own dedicated motor, paired with a sophisticated electric-air suspension system. This allowed the car to perform extraordinary feats such as rotating on its own axis and even “jumping” over potholes. While those capabilities already put the U9 in a class of its own, BYD clearly saw even more potential for the platform.

Now, thanks to a fresh filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), we have a clearer picture of BYD’s next move the Yangwang U9 Track Edition.

What Makes the Track Edition Special

In the automotive world, a “track edition” usually means enhanced aerodynamics, increased downforce, and improved braking systems to handle intense circuit driving. BYD appears to have checked all those boxes and then some.

According to the MIIT filings, each wheel is now equipped with an enhanced 555 kW motor. To give you an idea, a single motor of this power exceeds the overall powertrain of many high-performance electric vehicles currently available. The Track Edition features four such motors, resulting in a total output of 2,220 kW, which is equivalent to an astonishing 3,019 horsepower. The new motors feature Silicon Carbide power chips to manage the high voltages and currents of this platform.

That figure might sound like a typo, but given the recent trend of ultra-high-performance electric cars coming from China, it’s completely plausible. In fact, it places the Yangwang U9 Track Edition in an elite category of electric hypercars with more power than almost anything else available.

    Design and Aerodynamic Enhancements

In addition to its phenomenal power upgrade, BYD has outfitted the U9 Track Edition with a host of aerodynamic refinements and performance-driven enhancements. According to the filing, the car comes standard with:

    • 20-inch wheels wrapped in wide 325/35 R20 tires for maximum grip.
    • A carbon-fiber roof to reduce weight and lower the center of gravity.
    • A large fixed carbon-fiber rear wing for increased downforce.
    • Rear diffuser with adjustable blades for precise aerodynamics.

Buyers will also have the option to enhance these features further with optional aerodynamic parts. These include a standard or extended carbon-fiber front splitter for improved airflow management, as well as an electric rear wing for adjustable performance on demand.

    Nürburgring Testing and Powertrain Details

Latest reports this year suggest that the Yangwang U9 has already been spotted testing at the legendary Nürburgring racetrack. In a video shared by Drivegreen on X, a striking red U9 was seen tackling the iconic circuit ahead of its official lap time, which has yet to be announced.

The current U9 is powered by an 80 kWh BYD Blade battery pack, delivering up to 450 km of range under the CLTC cycle translating to roughly 370 km in real-world WLTP conditions. The car also incorporates BYD’s cutting-edge 800-volt architecture with dual-input fast-charging, enabling a 30% to 80% charge in just 10 minutes.

Pricing for the U9 starts at over ¥1,680,000 ($232,064, €215,000, ₹19,4000,000) with units already on display in showrooms across China.

    What We Still Don’t Know

While the MIIT filing gives us a solid look at the car’s exterior upgrades and incredible powertrain, key performance specs remain under wraps. For example, BYD has not yet disclosed the Track Edition’s acceleration figures, top speed, or range. Given the 3,000-horsepower output, it’s reasonable to expect lightning-fast acceleration times and track-dominating capabilities.

Enthusiasts and industry analysts alike will be watching closely for BYD’s official unveiling, where more details about the car’s engineering, handling dynamics, and performance benchmarks will likely be revealed. If the original U9 was any indication, the Track Edition will combine raw power with innovative features that set it apart from anything else on the market.

With this upcoming release, BYD isn’t just competing with global performance EV brands it’s aiming to redefine what’s possible in electric supercar engineering. Between the mind-bending horsepower, advanced aerodynamics, Nürburgring-tested performance, and precision handling upgrades, the Yangwang U9 Track Edition could be one of the most extreme EVs ever built.

What are your thoughts on BYD entering the 3,000-horsepower supercar league? Do you think this will shake up the global performance car market, or will it remain a niche showcase of engineering power? Let us know in the comments below!
