After years of anticipation following the Polestar Precept concept reveal in 2020, the wait is finally over. The Swedish EV maker has officially unveiled the production-ready Polestar 5 at the Munich Motor Show, and it’s aiming straight at heavyweights like the Porsche Taycan. Positioned as a high-performance electric grand tourer, the Polestar 5 blends cutting-edge design with remarkable performance figures while also making some daring choices that are bound to spark conversation.

A Striking Evolution of the Precept Concept

From the outside, the Polestar 5 remains a faithful evolution of the Precept. Its sleek, low-slung body carries a wide and athletic stance, accentuated by crisp character lines and a sloping roofline. The front end showcases Polestar’s signature dual-blade Pixel LED headlights, while the sculpted bodywork, retractable flush door handles, and frameless windows maintain a clean, modern look. Buyers can choose between large 20- to 22-inch wheels, which fill the arches perfectly and give the car a strong road presence.

One of the most talked-about design choices is at the rear. In a bold move, Polestar has eliminated the traditional rear window altogether. Instead, the 5 adopts a Kamm-style tail, similar to the Polestar 4, relying on a digital high-definition rearview mirror to provide visibility. This aerodynamic-focused decision may divide opinion, but it certainly underlines Polestar’s willingness to rethink automotive design.

Power That Redefines Performance

Polestar will offer the 5 in two dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configurations. The standard version produces an impressive 738 hp and 812 Nm of torque, launching from 0–100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds. Its top speed is capped at 250 km/h.

For drivers who crave even more adrenaline, the Polestar 5 Performance variant pushes output to 872 hp and 1,015 Nm of torque, slashing the 0–100 km/h sprint to just 3.2 seconds. This version also gets a sport-tuned suspension and adaptive dampers capable of adjusting in only three milliseconds, ensuring sharp handling without compromising comfort.

Range and Charging

Both models are powered by a 112 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The standard Polestar 5 is expected to deliver up to 670 km (WLTP) of range, while the Performance trim offers a slightly lower but still strong 565 km due to its higher power output.

When it’s time to recharge, the Polestar 5 supports 350 kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10% to 80% top-up in just 22 minutes. At home, it’s equipped with a 19 kW AC onboard charger. A neat detail is the charging status light integrated into the C-pillar, giving drivers an at-a-glance view of battery progress.

Inside the Cabin

Step inside, and the Polestar 5 offers a minimalist yet premium environment. The driver’s cockpit features three screens: a compact 9-inch digital cluster, a 9.5-inch head-up display, and a 14.5-inch portrait-oriented central touchscreen powered by Android Automotive OS with Google built-in.

Luxury extends to seating, with Recaro-developed front seats available in MicroTech or Nappa leather, offering heating, ventilation, and massage functions. Rear passengers enjoy reclining, heated, cooled, and massaging seats, all controlled via a dedicated panel in the armrest. A clever “foot garage” under the front seats adds comfort for rear passengers.

Cargo practicality hasn’t been overlooked either, with 365 liters of trunk space at the back and an extra 62 liters of frunk capacity.

Sustainable Materials and Design

Polestar continues its commitment to sustainability by incorporating flax-based trim instead of carbon fiber, as well as carpets made from recycled Econyl materials. This approach not only reduces environmental impact but also aligns with the brand’s forward-thinking ethos.

The Polestar 5 is now open for orders across 24 initial markets, though North America is not included in the first wave. In Germany, pricing starts at €119,900 (around $140,500; ₹1,24,00,000) for the standard model and €142,900 (around $168,500; ₹1,48,00,000) for the Performance trim. In the UK, prices are slightly lower, beginning at €104,900 (around $123,500; ₹1,29,00,000) and €123,000 (around $146,500; ₹1,09,00,000) respectively. Details for U.S. and Canadian markets will be revealed in the near future.

With its bold design, staggering performance, and luxury-focused interior, the Polestar 5 is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about EVs of 2025.
